Laila escapes Kabul and goes to Pakistan with Tariq and her children. But then his lip pulls back in a sneer and Mariam know it is futile and she is responsible for fnishing this. People who are able to endure will go farther in life than those who cannot because they do not fight back. Life becomes a difficult grind for her and Miriam, as Rasheed becomes more and more gruff and domineering, and political conditions worsen. Throughout the novel, it is present how much women struggle.
As Laila recovers from her injuries, Rasheed expresses interest in her, to Mariam's dismay. Miriam is raised outside of Herat in a cabin. It turns out the man who had come by all those years ago was hired by Rasheed to trick Laila. Mariam lives in a kolba on the outskirts of Herat with her embittered mother. Mariam begs him not to, but Rasheed threatens to turn Laila out onto the streets.
Jalil, on the other hand, claims that he was involved with Mariam's birth. Mariam walks to heart and finds Jalil's house, but he doesn't let her in, so she sleeps on the street. Rendered as fiction in A Thousand Splendid Suns, however, it devastates in a new way. As conflict turns to war in Kabul, living conditions become difficult for everyone.
Eventually, Mariam askes Jalil to take her to the cinema to see the new cartoon of Pinocchio. Although she's never been inside, her curiosity gets the better of her, and she enters the room. She wishes to return and contribute. Soon after the birth, Rasheed demands that Laila have sex with him. Tariq and Laila visit together over the next few days, and Tariq describes his past. Mullah Faizullah's son gives Laila a box that Jalil left for Mariam. However, Laila has far more happy childhood moments than Mariam, from her walks home from school with her friends Giti and Hasina, to her lessons with Babi and, above all, her friendship with the mischievous Tariq, who lost one leg in a land mine accident when he was five.
I spoke to many of those women in Kabul. Laila, born a generation later, is comparatively privileged during her youth until their lives intersect and she is also forced to accept a marriage proposal from Rasheed, Mariam's husband. She finally tells him how disappointed she is with him, and this visibly upsets him. Discriminatory practices such as beatings, murder, loss of control of their children, and humiliation continue even today. They are separated when Tariq's family flees to Pakistan, and then Laila's parents are killed in a rocket attack. Rasheed searches for work elsewhere but has trouble.
